If you’re new to watercolor painting, have some experience with art, or are just curious to get in touch with your creative side, this workshop is for you! Douglas Williams returns to Cossitt Library for another art instruction series. Beginners and advanced beginners are encouraged to join us  to learn about the seven elements of design: line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color. Introduction to watercolor painting techniques will include:

  • Wet on Wet
  • Water Blooms
  • Wet on Dry
  • Washes
  • Uses of water
  • Dry Brush
  • Brush patterns
  • Color wheel
  • Mixing Colors
  • Color saturation
  • Masking Fluid
  • Effects of Salt

SESSION # 1: Learn about the elements of design in art, how to mix paint with water in order to apply color paper in different ways. Techniques may include wet in wet, watercolor wash, effects of different brushes, and various uses of water during painting.

SESSION # 2:  Focus on layering effects, such as applying wet paint over dry paint and using “dry brush” techniques in design. We will discuss the importance of planning a composition for a painting and pitfalls to avoid.

SESSION # 3: Understand color theory and how to use a color wheel in composing paintings. Learn about key elements of color, including hue (color family), value (light and dark tones) and saturation (color intensity).

SESSION # 4: Explore additional watercolor techniques, such as using masking fluid and sea salt. Gain an understanding of perspective and lighting when working with still life and landscape compositions.
